"Frida Kahlo and the Flying Monkey", 5' totem - Ceramic wall hanging 2015-2016
These works started after a 2015 trip to Thailand and seeing Hanuman, the Hindu flying monkey statuary at Temples in Bangkok, Thailand, the story of the saving of the earth, and how historically that image also morphed into the satire of the business man. When I was back in the US I was reflecting on Frida Kahlo and her relationship to animals from the critical work of Judy Chicago. My sculptural work is an appropriation of Kahlo’s paintings as illustrated in "Frida Kahlo: Face to Face" by Judy Chicago. Assembled, the individual pieces as a totem gain the historical references of religious worship. Kahlo’s images of her love, pain, and loss often have dual contemporary meanings. Kahlo’s imagery has become more relevant today in the recognition of minorities, women’s rights, violence against women, and the corruption of our institutions. |
